31 Dec Happy Birthday Sarah Jane
About 2013 years ago, somewhere between Sunday and Saturday, in a manger somewhere in the middle east, a child was born. He walked on water, healed some people, drank a lot of wine, and partied like it was 0000, then went to heaven, all before he was 35, everyone else since has been a bit of a let down really, and then there was you. Am I comparing you to Jesus? Not really, he had a penis and a beard, and you don’t have a penis or a beard.
It’s your birthday, you are 32 and driving a rickshaw around India, beats serving microwave meals to a gathering of whingers innit! Who would have thought when you left the birthing canal all those years ago, you would be meeting up with 3 online friends to travel through a densely populated country, with nothing but your wits, a tuk tuk, and the best phone, camera, laptop combination the world has ever seen. Or that your achievements would include hog tying the best boyfriend / comedian / amateur model the world has never known. With that one achievement alone you could lay claim to a life well lived, but there is even more to you than that.
Birthday messages are a hard one, it is difficult not to be cliched, and say things like “Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday to you, you look like a monkey and you smell like one too”, so instead let me say “I’m really glad your mum did what she did when she did”, and “My life has been fuller for having had you in it”, and “At 32 you have and are achieving what most people wait until they are 65 to even try”, and “I am proud of you, and proud to call you my girlfriend”, and “Could you please come back because I’m eating like a pig and my personal hygiene has really slipped since you’ve been gone”.
Being the ‘young gun’ in a relationship has its challenges, but I want you to know that I don’t let your 6 month head start affect me much, and am quite proud to have pulled an older, wiser woman. Sure you may struggle to keep up sometimes, but I love you anyway, and when you love someone age is just a number, a bigger number it’s true, but still just a number.
So, to my older, wiser, well traveled girlfriend whom I love:
Love is looking after someone when the yak meat makes a return, love is holding an umbrella over the other person when the sun is beating down, love is not having the last sip of coke zero, love is letting someone do their own thing when you would rather have them close to you. Love is giving up everything to follow the same dream, love is arguing and letting it go because you mean more to each other than being right, love is changing your lifestyle because the other person is more valuable to you than anything that has come before, love is being around a person all day and all night 7 days a week, and looking forward to Monday so you can spend the next 7 days with them, love is what you and I have.
I love you very much, wish you all the best on your adventure, and can’t wait to see you again.
Happy Birthday Sarah Jane
