We headed South in search of better flying weather but unfortunately the wind still isn't right and it is proving difficult to find a way up the mountain if we fly down. So we headed to another launch called Castallucio which seemed promising. But we didn't take into account last year's earthquakes.
When we got close we found a closed down town and closed roads. We spent the night in a small clearing and in the morning spoke to the locals who told us that there was no way to the town as all the roads were still closed. They told us about how they were living in temporary housing until areas were cleared but didn't know if some of their homes would ever be safe. Quite sobering.
They said we should go see Norcia as some was still open and we could see the damage. Norcia is another beautiful town in the Italian countryside, at least what is left of it. We wandered through the ruined streets and stopped to buy some of what they are famous for, truffles! So tonight I will make pasta with truffle oil and we shall ponder the illusion of permanence that something like this brings to light. Or just watch another episode of Blacksails at our parking by the lake.
It is sad to see how much damage was done by the earthquakes, but also great to see people moving forward with such gusto.
Tomorrow we probably head to Florence!
