A couple days away from flying to do something a bit different for Andrew, Calina and I, travel stuff!
We rented a couple motorbikes and went off to a place in the mountains about 3 hours away, here there are giant palms which are only found in a few places in the world, all in South America, and one of them is here in the Cocora Valle, so we had to go see.
We booked in at a hostel in a cute little town called Salento, which seems to be where all the seemingly super young travellers stay, and after a fun, if a little busy ride to the town, we left our stuff and went wandering, old buildings and views galore were followed by lunch on the edge of town. I tried the trout in coffee salsa, nice but unusual…
The main attraction was the following day where we hiked for 5 hours up a mountain through the palm forests. Really unusual landscape and incredible to walk through. As you head up the mountain surrounded by lush vegetation everything changes and you become surrounded by clouds and different vegetation. You then hike down through the jungle alongside a river until reaching the hummingbird sanctuary, which Calina loved of course. Eventually after much more wandering, bridge crossings and slippery steps you pop out at the giant palms again.
From here it was a ride back to Salento for a giant Bandeja Paisa, so much food, before heading back to Roldanillo. A great mini adventure in Colombia.
