Salkantay trek to Machu Picchu. Day 1
We have returned! After 5 days of hiking in the mountains to the famous Machu Picchu, one of the seven wonders, we are back in Cusco recovering from some intense hiking. We met some great people, faced some challenging conditions, pushed ourselves through some difficult hiking points, and saw some incredible scenery.
Day 1 saw us meet up with our group at 5:30am in Cusco, and jump on a bus to where we began the hike at around 3600 meters. The first stop was the beautiful Humantay Lake, a challenging hike when already at altitude, and then up to its 4250 meters. But with a beautiful view as a reward. Then it was back down the mountain a bit in the rain, to our glassed in "tents" where we would spend the night.
We wandered around for awhile checking out the llamas and relaxing before a great dinner. It was early to bed for everyone, but not a great sleep for most (Calina slept great of course), due to either altitude (struggled to catch my breath at times), cold or a few people having dodgy stomachs. The next day would be a 5am start with an even more challenging hike to greater altitudes. Coming up in day 2!
